Climate Change Science and Impacts, cross-listed as ATM 245, ECL 245, and HYD 245, provides an overview of climate change science with an emphasis on climate literacy, climate models and climate communication. The course examines the impacts of climate change on various sectors of the economy and ecosystem services, with a focus on water, agriculture, energy, health, infrastructure, ecosystem services, tribal and indigenous communities in California. Discussions also integrate the climate justice, political, societal, and economic dimensions of these issues.

This course aims to:

  • educate students on the fundamentals of climate science and the causes and manifestation of climate change
  • discuss the strengths and limitations of climate models and climate projections
  • train students to effectively communicate about climate change, especially relating to climate uncertainty and risk
  • train students to identify and counter climate disinformation
  • expose students to theoretical concepts and methods from multiple disciplines
  • provide venues for all students to bring their disciplinary and interdisciplinary training to bear on a common challenge and set of activities.
